Thank you for your crazy hair day efforts last week! The children all looked amazing and the school raised £158 for The Garden House Hospice, which was the charity chosen by our year 2s. Also a big thank you for buying our plants, we have raised £109 for resources for Reception, which we are really excited about!

Phonics -

A recap of:

  • compound words
  • words ending in -ing
  • words ending in -ed which sounds like 'id'
  • words ending in 's' which sound like 's' or 'z'
  • words ending in -es which sounds like 'iz'

Again, the children are working incredibly hard to read and 'tweak' these words, and write these words, remembering what they sound like and what they should read as.

Some words we have written - rooftop, visit, coats, wishes, cooks, fishes.

Maths -

This week's focus has been on deepening the children's understanding of mathematical relationships within numbers to 10, recognising relationships and seeing mathematical structure. Some activities include:

  • assembling a whole object from different parts

  • making a whole number from 2 parts

  • splitting some numbers into 2 groups that each have an equal amount

  • recognising that 2 equal groups can make a double, e.g. double 3 is 6 altogether

  • understanding that double patterns are even; they have ‘flat tops’ because they are made of 2 equal groups

  • understanding that odd numbers cannot be split into 2 equal groups; they’re not doubles, they have an ‘odd block’/’odd one out’

Activities for home:

  • Work as a group to decorate a butterfly. We need to have the same number of (e.g.) gems, counters, etc. on each side. How many have we got on each side? How many have we got altogether? How do you know?
  • show doubles amounts on their fingers? Can they show and explain a number that is NOT a double?

Topic -

We have enjoyed reading Martha Maps it Out this week, where we have looked at maps and how they help us find our way. We discussed when we would need to use a map, and practised using directional language such as through, forward, across to create our own map as a class. This week's challenge has been to cut and stick our own maps, where the children were encouraged to think about their starting point and destination, as well as what they would need to pass in order to get to their destination.

Have a lovely weekend!
