A lovely first week back, we hope you all had a lovely half term!
Phonics -
This week, we have recapped longer words that have 2 syllables and double digraphs, as well as introducing words that end with -s, but sound like 'z', and words ending in -es, but sound like 'iz'. The children are working incredibly hard and should be very proud of themselves as they read these words and remember to 'tweak' them, and remember these suffixes as they write.
Words we have written include - visit, poison, coats, cooks, wishes, boxes, fishes.
Maths -
This week's focus has been on assessing and deepening our understanding of how to compare quantities. Activities include:
-
comparing groups of the same object with a big difference in number, and then a small difference
-
comparing by looking, then by matching 1-to-1
-
understanding when groups have an equal amount
-
comparing groups of objects that are of different sizes, colours or attributes
-
beginning to generalise about ‘1 more/1 less’ within 10
-
developing a sense of magnitude, e.g. knowing that 8 is a lot more than 2, but that 4 is only a little bit more than 2.
When comparing quantities, the children have been reminded to focus on the numerosity of the group (how many there are) and not to be distracted by the size or spatial arrangement of the objects.
Topic -
We have read the lovely story Welcome to our World this week, to introduce this half terms topic 'where can we explore?' The children had the opportunity to explore and discuss the similarities and differences they noticed between the children and families in the story, to themselves.
We have introduced challenges for our final half term, where the children will complete a piece of independent work each week. This week, the children wrote sentences using pictures from the book, writing about what they could see. For example 'he is happy', 'I can see a fish', 'the food looks yummy'. Lots of brilliant writing!
