Weekly News, Summer B, Week 1

5th June 2026

Announcements: We have started to rehearse songs and lines for our upcoming play performance on the 7th and 8th July.

In DT, we will be making our own wooden photo frame. If you have any small photo frames at home (they can be any material) we would love to have a look at how they are made. Please bring them in on Monday. Thank you!

What a fantastic day of crazy hairstyles! We have loved seeing all the fun, creativity, and enthusiasm the children have shown in support of our fundraiser. A huge thank you for all your generous donations. The money raised will go to Garden House Hospice , the charity chosen by the children themselves. Thank you for helping us support such a worthwhile cause, we are proud of the children for helping to make a difference!

English: This week, we explored what a recount is and read the opening of the wordless picture book Here I Am by Patti Kim. The children discussed the events in the story and explored how the main character might be feeling. They then wrote captions to add words to the opening of the book, using sentences that captured the character’s feelings about events in the recount.

Maths: In Maths this week, we have been learning more about fractions. The children explored how one half is the same as two quarters and learned to recognise and find three-quarters. We also practised counting in fractions up to a whole. The children enjoyed using practical resources and working through different challenges to help build their understanding and confidence with fractions.

Science: In Science this week, we have been observing life cycles. The children were excited to watch our butterflies grow and used their scientific observation skills to identify and discuss the different stages of the butterfly life cycle. We also carried out an investigation using slices of bread. One slice was touched with washed hands, one with unwashed hands, and one was rubbed on a door handle. The children made predictions and then observed the changes over time. There were lots of surprised (and disgusted!) reactions when the bread from the door handle became the mouldiest! This investigation helped reinforce the importance of washing our hands thoroughly with soap to help prevent the spread of germs.

A brilliant week, Year 2. Well done!
