Happy New Year! We hope you all had a restful break. We've had a lovely first week back, it's been wonderful watching the children come back into school so happily, despite the weather!

Maths -

This week, the children have consolidated their understanding of the composition of 5. Composing and decomposing numbers involves the children investigating part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 5 can be made of 3 and 2. The children are deepening their understanding of a ‘whole’ being made up of smaller parts through practical experience, in this case moving frogs from a log to a pool in a nursery rhyme. The children are recognising that numbers can be made by combining parts in different ways, and are being encouraged to make links by considering similarities and differences in the ways of making 5. A key focus will be partitioning 5 (splitting it into parts) and considering the missing parts; the children will be encouraged to visualise numbers within 5 and to work out how many are hidden when they know the whole number in a set.

Topic -

Our topic this term is Who Can Help Me? We have started by reading the story A Superhero Like You, where the children enjoyed talking about the people in their community who help them and help make their community a safe place to be. We discussed how they may not look like typical superheroes, but they play an important role in society. The children then had the opportunity to discuss their role in the Strathmore community, and the sense of pride they feel when they help others, before drawing 3 people who help them.

Notices -

We are always happy to accept small boxes/tubes for our junk modelling area, no toilet rolls though, please.

If you would like to come into Reception to talk to the children about your job role for this terms topic, please email the office or speak to class teachers to arrange a date and time - we would love to hear from you!
