A busy week in Reception with lots of lovely learning!

Phonics -

Graphemes - z, zz, qu, ch & words ending with -s (plural and verb)

Tricky words - go, no, to, into. The 'o' in go & no are the tricky part, making an 'oa' sound. The 'o' in to & into make an 'oo' sound.

Words we have written in class - can, back, run, had, sun.

Maths -

This week the children have used their perceptual subitising skills (seeing the quantity without counting) in increasingly complex arrangements, moving from dots in a line and arrangements of 2, to a focus on standard dice arrangements. For larger quantities, the children have began using the skill of conceptual subitising; beginning to quickly see the sub-groups within these larger numbers. A key focus has been developing the skills of visualising, where the children have been encouraged to look carefully at arrangements of dots, then close their eyes and explain what they saw. Using spatial language to describe sub-groups within these arrangements will deepen the children's understanding of part-whole relations and allow them to further consider composition (the number within numbers).

Topic -

We have read the story Little Glow this week, which is a lovely story that showcases the amazing celebrations of light from different communities. Some of these celebrations include Lunar New Year, Diwali, Christmas, Halloween and Hanukkah. The Little Glow character in the story watches as families use different kinds of lights to celebrate, and highlights how even the smallest glow has huge significance. We enjoyed drawing our favourite celebrations, discussing with friends how we celebrate and why.

Our topic next half term is People Who Help Us. If you have a job that you would like to come and tell us about, we would love to have you to visit! Please email admin to arrange a date.
