A busy week in Reception with lots of wonderful learning!
Phonics - we've had a focus on blending this week, where we are now writing 2 CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words independently on our whiteboards. Some words include - red, hot, sit. This is amazing at this time of year - well done, Reception!
Maths -
This week, the children have started to explore composition by focusing on the preliminary skills: the concept of ‘wholes’ and ‘parts’. We have done this by investigating their own bodies and familiar toys to understand that whole things are often made up of smaller parts and that a whole is, therefore, bigger than its parts.
Key language in this area can be tricky; clarity around a ‘whole’ and how it is different from a ‘hole’ has been made explicit. Further confusion can arise from other composition language, e.g. when do we mean ‘a part’ and how is this different from ‘apart’? Our stem sentence 'my […] is a part of me and the whole of me is [name]' has been used to help consolidate understanding.
Topic -
Furthering our learning as we explore night time, we have learnt about nocturnal and diurnal animals this week. Using pictures, we have sorted a range of animals into these categories, and drawn our favourite nocturnal animal.
