A wet and windy, but lovely week in Reception!

Maths -

This week's focus has been comparing. The children have been asked to look at the attributes and begin to understand similarities and differences between objects and this week’s activities focus on further developing these innate skills. The children have also compared the number of objects in 2 sets by matching them 1:1, seeing that objects in some sets can be matched without any being left over has drawn the children’s attention to instances when the quantities of objects are equal. Language has been a key focus once again, using 'more than' 'fewer than' and 'an equal number' to describe how many objects there are in a set. As the focus this week is on countable things, ‘fewer than’ is used rather than ‘less than’ and ‘more than’ is used rather than ‘greater than’.

Topic -

We have started to explore space this week, reading Whatever Next! We have looked at the different moon phases and drawn what we would like to take to space!

Early Learning Goals (ELGs) -

Over the next few weeks, we will be adding ELGs to our blogs (one area per week). ELGs are the level of development children should be expected to have reached by the end of Reception. ELGs are not used as our curriculum as a whole, our curriculum at Strathmore aims to provide a wide variety of experiences. However, these are goals that the children will be assessed on at the end of Reception.

Communication & Language -

Listening, Attention and Understanding -

Listen attentively and respond to what they hear with relevant questions, comments and actions when being read to and during whole class discussions and small group interactions.

Make comments about what they have heard and ask questions to clarify their understanding.

Hold conversation when engaged in back-and-forth exchanges with their teacher and peers.

Speaking -

Participate in small group, class and one-to-one discussions, offering their own ideas, using recently introduced vocabulary.

Offer explanations for why things might happen, making use of recently introduced vocabulary from stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems when appropriate.

Express their ideas and feelings about their experiences using full sentences, including use of past, present and future tenses and making use of conjunctions, with modelling and support from their teacher.
