As the weather begins getting colder, please ensure your child brings a coat and wellie boots are in school. We will continue having our garden open during free flow, so waterproof clothes are also recommended - these can stay on the children's pegs.
Phonics -
Graphemes - ck, e, u, r
Tricky word - I
'ck' is our first digraph this year. Digraphs are 2 letters that make 1 sound, we have learnt that when we see a digraph in a word such as 'duck' we would sound it out as 'd-u-ck', not 'd-u-c-k'
Maths -
This week, the children have explored how numbers can be composed of 1s and, from this, begin to investigate the composition of 3 and 4.
Composing and de-composing numbers involves children investigating part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 3 can be composed of 1 and 2. The children are learning from practical experiences that a ‘whole’ is made up of smaller parts and is, therefore, bigger than its parts.
Activities for home -
- Provide paper cake cases and small objects e.g. acorns, pom-poms) for the children to make repeated collections of 3 or 4. (If tweezers are included, this activity could also help to develop fine motor skills.)
- Provide small pieces of card for children to create their own subitising cards to use with friends/family. They could decorate the cards by using glitter pens/stickers. The children can then sort and match the cards created into 'all the 3s/all the 4s'.
We have watched 1 minute snippets of Numberblocks in each lesson this week. Here are the complete episodes:
-
Series 1, Episode 3: ‘Two’ explores the ‘two-ness of 2’ and highlights things that are more enjoyable with 2 friends.
-
Series 1, Episode 4: ‘Three’ explores the ‘three-ness of 3’ as Three sings her song.
-
Series 1, Episode 6: ‘Four’ explores the ‘four-ness of 4’ as the Numberblocks discover how to combine to make 4.
Topic -
We enjoyed reading the story 'We Are Family', which is a lovely story that highlights how special families are, even though they all look different. We had class discussions on who we live with, our wider families, special traditions, and how they made us feel.
We then completed a 'my family' picture, where we drew the people in our families, and what we love about them.
Have a lovely weekend!
