English

Over the past two weeks we have been learning all about the world of non-fiction! We have thought carefully about what makes a non-fiction text, from the contents page to the headings, questions, information and diagrams, the children have absolutely loved this unit! We have focused on a text called 'The Big Book of Bugs' by Yuval Zommer which has immersed us in all things insects!

We focused on creating the life cycles of a butterfly and a frog and discussed why a circular diagram with arrows and numbers was the most useful way of explaining to our reader which order to read the steps in. The children absolutely blew us away with how well they understood the concept of life cycles and were even able to extend their learning by writing sentences that joined two ideas together using the word 'and' and included adjectives to provide their reader with more detail!

We ended this topic by creating our own bug! We combined characteristics of bugs and creatures that already exist and drew labelled diagrams of them. We then created our own version of a double page spread for The Big Book of Bugs and wrote a short description about what our bug looks like, what it can do and how it can move. We then created our own life cycle for our bugs! From beeflys to buttercatter's, the children have produced absolutely wonderful writing during these past few weeks and we feel very proud of them!

Maths

The children have loved learning all about Fractions so far this term! We have focused on recognising and finding a half of a shape, object and quantity before moving on to a quarter of a shape, object or quantity!

We have thought carefully about making equal parts and we now know that in order to have a half or a quarter of 'something,' each part must be the same size! We practised finding halves of shapes in different ways and were able to recognise that a half is made up of two equal parts whereas a quarter is made up of four equal parts!

We ended our topic by physically making a number and then quartering it. Using a stem sentence to help us, we were able to explain how many cubes we started with and whether or not we were able to split them into four equal groups. We were then able to describe how many cubes made up one quarter of our original number.

Phonics

Miss Devenny and I would just like to say how incredibly proud we are of our children in completing their Phonics Screening Check. They showed such resilience, determination and commitment towards their challenge and absolutely soared through! All of the children came back beaming and with such a sense of pride on their shoulders. Thank you so much for all of your continued support in providing our children with the greatest learning journey.

Topic Learning

DT

In DT this term, we are going to be making our own healthy and delicious ice lollies! Last week we thought carefully about what our favourite fruits are and drew and labelled them into our sketchbooks. This week we began introducing the tools and equipment we will need to use in the coming weeks! The children practised the skills of peeling, chopping and cutting and were introduced to the 'claw' and 'bridge' techniques of cutting soft fruits!

Science

In Science this term we are learning all about animals and humans! Last week we revisited learning about the different parts of our body but this week we expanded on that by focusing on our five senses. We used both classrooms to explore our sense of sight, hearing, touch and smell and used our sense of taste during DT when we tried the fruit we chopped and cut!

Reminders

We’re excited to share that there will be a Key Stage 1 trip to Shepreth on Monday 13th July. Thank you so much to those of you who have offered to volunteer! Miss D and I will be contacting some of you this week to confirm whether or not you are still able to help!

Could we please ask that you send your children into school with a spare pair of clothes and wellies. The weather has been absolutely crazy over these past few weeks and whilst we hope the sunshine is on its way back, you never can tell! Could we please ask that your children have spare socks and underwear too, as these are items of clothing we struggle to keep stocked in school!
