Another super week of learning in Reception. The children are becoming more and more familliar with school routines and really working hard in all areas of their learning. Tapestry has now been set up and one parent/carer per child will have received an activation email.

Phonics -

Graphemes - g, o, c, k.

Tricky words - is.

Tricky words are also known as common exception words (CEW). These are words that cannot be sounded out or decoded as a sound/sounds in the word goes against the typical phonetic rules. The 's' in 'is' makes a 'z' sound, which makes it a tricky word. We will now be learning one tricky word a week, alongside new graphemes.

Maths -

The focus this week is counting, cardinality and ordinality. We have engaged in activities that draw attention to the purpose of counting – to find out ‘how many’ objects there are. After subitising last week, we are developing our counting skills for children to identify how many objects there are in a set that cannot be subitised. This connects subitising and counting to cardinality whereby the last number in the count tells us ‘how many’ things there are altogether.

Ideas for home -

Play skittles in the outdoor environment so the children can count how many skittles they have knocked down.

Provide a selection of 'counting wands' for the children to use to help them keep track of their counting.

Topic -

We have enjoyed reading The Koala Who Could this week, discussing how Kevin was brave to have a go, try something new and persevere when facing challenges. As persevere has been our word of the week, the children have discussed what activities they have persevered with and when they have been brave, such as swimming and starting school. They have then drawn their hobbies, sharing this with friends.

Reading practice -

We have started reading practice this week which was very exciting! The children will be going home with a reading book in a named wallet. We hope you enjoy sharing these stories at home, and a quick reminder that these books will be changed every Friday, so please ensure they are in school in the named wallet as a new book will not go home until the original is returned.
