Weekly Newsletter 4

A great week of learning Year 1! It is lovely to see children becoming more independent in the mornings and settling into their routine for the day.

English

This week we have enjoyed reading our new book together- Puffin Peter. We first found out lots of information about puffins and then tried our best to draw a detailed picture of a puffin including the labels- webbed feet, wings, feathers and beak. We also had a go at writing our own simple sentence about a puffin.

Maths

In Maths, we compared amounts using the greater than, equal to and less than symbol. It was a little tricky drawing the symbols, but we persevered! We also liked playing ‘splat the number’ game to find one more and one less of a number.

Phonics

This week, we began to learn phase 5 sounds. We learnt the sounds- ay, ou, oy and ea. Our tricky words this week include- put, push , full and pull. We will have lots of opportunity to rehearse and review the sounds in the upcoming weeks.

Topic

In Computing, we had fun exploring how to use the beebots. We programmed the mini ‘bots’ to go forward, backward, left and right. In Science, we tested materials to see if they absorb or soak up water.  We are especially enjoying pen disco at the moment. We love listening to the music and using our pens to create waves, zig- zags and spirals!
