What a fantastic first full week we have had in Year One! The children have absolutely blown us away with their resilience, courage and readiness to learn - it makes Miss Devenny and I feel so excited about the year ahead and the journey that is waiting for us! 

English 

This week, we have introduced the children to our first key text 'Jasper's Beanstalk' by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen. We thought carefully about the word 'prediction' which just happens to be our word of the week! We used our prior knowledge of the Traditional Tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk' to predict what we thought might be at the top of Jasper's beanstalk. We then used our understanding of labels to label a diagram of a sunflower before moving on to captions and exploring how these short phrases/sentences can describe what is happening in a picture. The children have shown us some wonderful writing this week and we cannot wait to challenge them even further as time goes on! 

Maths 

We began our unit of Place Value by focusing on sorting different objects into groups of our choice. We revisited our learning from Reception about counting to 10 and challenged ourselves to count up to 20! We then extended this activity by counting out a smaller number from a group of 10 objects. We explored some of the rules of counting, such as only counting each object once, only saying each number once and starting at 1 rather than 0. 

Science 

In Science this term, we are going to be learning all about materials! This week, we began our topic by identifying different natural materials and some of the objects that can be made from them. For example, we know that wool comes from a sheep and the wool can be used to make wooly jumpers! Wood can come from trees and the wood can be used to create wooden fences around our gardens. 

Other Subjects 

Art 

In Art this week, we introduced the children to the concept of 'line.' What are lines? What can different types of lines look like? Do they have to be used to create realistic drawings? The children experimented with a range of mark-making tools such as fine line black pens, felt tip pens, pencils and crayons to draw a variety of different types of lines. 

History 

In History this term, we are going to be investigating whether or not toys have always looked the same! This week, we showed the children a selection of modern day toys and discussed what some of their favourite toys are. We drew pictures of them into our Learning Journeys and wrote sentences describing them and how they can be played with.

Reminders

  • Please can we ensure the children are leaving all toys at home, as it can make carpet and learning time very disruptive. If your child has a transitional object that supports them with coming into school each day and this has been agreed between you and the class teachers, that is absolutely fine but the objects must be kept in the children's book bags throughout the day. 

  • Please could you send your children into school with spare clothes, including underwear, as we are outside for our OPAL sessions during all weathers and we are very limited on the spare clothing we have!
