26th June 2026

It has been a very hot week in Year 2! We have done our best to keep the children as comfortable as possible throughout the school day by offering longer breaks and making sure everyone was regularly refilling their water bottles to stay hydrated. To make playtimes more comfortable, we transformed the hall into a cooler space where children could enjoy construction activities, drawing and quieter indoor play away from the heat.

As part of our learning this week, we focused on sun safety and discussed how important it is to enjoy the sunshine safely. The children learnt the phrase wrap, splat, hat to help remember how to stay protected in the sun. Wrap reminded us to cover up with suitable clothing, splat helped us remember to apply sunscreen and hat reminded us to wear a hat to protect our head and eyes. We also learnt about the benefits of sunlight and how vitamin D helps to keep our bones healthy, whilst understanding that when the weather becomes too hot we need to protect ourselves from harmful UV rays. The children then designed some brilliant sun safety posters which we displayed around the school.

In Maths, we started our new unit on position and direction. The children used the vocabulary- left, right, above, below, between to describe the position of a shape in relation to another shape. We had lots of fun using Bee Bots where the children began learning how to code by sequencing directions and programming the Bee Bots to move. This was a great introduction to understanding simple algorithms and the children really enjoyed the challenge.

For prickly spellings this week, we focused on the words once, two, any and many. We also learnt about homophones which are words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings. We looked at examples such as one and won and practised putting them into sentences such as- 'I had one cupcake'.

A very, very hot and busy week but the children have kept on smiling and trying their best. Well done, Year 2!
