English
In Year One, we are absolutely loving the adventures Martha takes in Martha Maps It Out. Our extended piece of writing is going to be a story about our own adventure; who might we meet? Where will we go? What will we do? These are all of the questions we will be answering in our stories!
This week we have been focusing on writing a piece of exciting information about ourselves, or news we have to share. We have then created the character that we hope to meet in our story; we had killer whales, pretty princesses, ferocious tigers and even Superman! Our challenge at the end of the week was to combine these two steps and write a conversation between ourselves and our character, telling our character our exciting information/news! The children have shown such huge progress in their sentence structures and using different pieces of punctuation, such as question and exclamation marks.
Maths
This week we have focused on identifying the tens and ones within a number - in Europe and Asia Class, we refer to these as 'chips and peas!' The tens are the chips and the ones are the peas. We know that one chip is the equivalent to one ten and one pea is the equivalent to one one. Ask your children if they can tell you how many chips are in the number 34? How many peas? What about the number 26?
We have also introduced the concept of 'grouping a ten.' This meant we were trying to identify how many groups of ten we can make within a large set of objects. It was then much easier for us to see how many ones were left over. We know now that we should always start counting with the tens and then add the ones to work out what number we have.
Next week, the children will be learning how to partition a number into it's tens and ones using part-whole models. How can we split the number 47? Where does the whole number belong? Where do the parts belong? How can we show the two different parts that make the whole?
Phonics
In Phonics, we continued revisiting graphemes we have already learnt but that make a different sound to the ones we learnt previously:
- tch (ch) - match, fetch, catch
- ture (ch) - adventure
- al (ar) - half, calf
- a (ar) - father
Topic Learning
Art
This week we continued to use the key techniques of kneading, rolling, pushing, pulling and pinching to create clay hedgehogs! They absolutely loved adding their own detail using natural resources such as sticks, berry stalks and pine-cones to create texture for the spikes! Next week, we will be painting our hedgehogs!
Computing
This week, we learnt all about what an 'algorithm' is. The children were able to explain this as 'a set of instructions that someone, or something, has to follow.' In this case, it was Indi! The children created their own algorithm for Indi to follow and in groups, recreated them using the coloured tiles. The children explored whether or not the algorithms worked and what they could do if it didn't. We have seen such fantastic team work and heard such belly laughter during these lessons - they truly are a highlight of our week!
